Elution of metronidazole and gentamicin from polymethylmethacrylate beads.
OBJECTIVE To characterize the elution and bioactivity of metronidazole and gentamicin sulfate polymerized, individually and in combination, with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). STUDY DESIGN In vitro experimental study. METHODS PMMA beads containing metronidazole (3 concentrations), gentamicin sulfate, or metronidazole and gentamicin sulfate were immersed in 5 mL of phosphate-buffered saline ...
متن کاملOptimized elution of daptomycin from polymethylmethacrylate beads.
We demonstrate that xylitol can be added to polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement to enhance the elution of daptomycin in terms of both the peak and sustained release of antibiotic. We also demonstrate that a PMMA-xylitol formulation optimized for daptomycin can be used to enhance the elution of both vancomycin and gentamicin.
متن کاملElution of gentamicin and vancomycin from polymethylmethacrylate beads and hip spacers in vivo
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Late infections after total hip arthroplasty are still a problem. Treatment procedures include resection arthroplasty with implantation of antibiotic-loaded beads or implantation of an antibiotic-impreganted spacer. However, little is known about antibiotic elution from bone cement beyond the first 2-3 postoperative days in humans. METHODS 17 hip spacers (80 g PMMA, 1g ...
متن کاملThe Release of Gentamicin from Polymethylmethacrylate Beads
Gentamicin incorporated in beads of polymethylmethacrylate has been shown capable of being released over a period of several months in concentrations sufficiently high to control most pathogens. The therapeutic efficacy of such beads has been demonstrated in a model of osteomyelitis of the femur in the dog. Good tolerance has been shown, both in the animal model and in tissue cultures. In forty...
متن کاملElution characteristics of vancomycin, teicoplanin, gentamicin and clindamycin from calcium sulphate beads.
The in vitro release of vancomycin, teicoplanin, gentamicin and clindamycin from biodegradable calcium sulphate (CaSO(4)) carrier beads is described. All antibiotics showed prolonged release from the carrier beads, which was elevated during the first 24 h, with peak levels exceeding 2500 microg/bead. Doubling the antibiotic load of the beads revealed a more prolonged elution and a two-fold incr...
